About us...           

The AWO is an intergovernmental organization established under the umbrella of the League of Arab States and headquartered in Egypt. It emerged from the Cairo Declaration issued by the First Arab Women Summit which convened in Cairo in November 2000 in response to a call by H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Egypt’s First Lady and which was co-organized by the National Council for Women in Egypt, Hariri Foundation in Lebanon and the League of Arab States. The agreement came into effect in March 2003.

Direct dialogue  between Arabs and  

Westerns is probably one of  the most important tools to challenge the stereotypes about Arabs in general and the status of Arab women in particular. AWO  organized a seminar on 19-20 September, 2005 at Churchill College, Cambridge University, under the title of "Arab Women: Past, Present and Future". To provide a forum for the Arab

 Youth to exchange ideas on the current status of Arab Women and the exerted efforts to empower them, the AWO organized its first Arab Youth Dialogue in Cairo, 5-7 July 2005. This Dialogue provided an outlet for a group of 27 promising young men and women from all member states to actively exchange their views on how they perceive gender equality and women rights, and how to be better prepared for the future.

Aiming at enhancing the efficiency of future

 programs designed to empower women in the fields of education, health, media and economics in member states, the AWO adopted the Survey Study Project as one of its preliminary activities. To conduct this project, the AWO organized two workshops where experts representing twelve of the member states convened to survey the projects adopted to empower women and obstacles that they have to struggle with.

The World Summit on the Information Society  was held in two phases, with participation of 175 countries. The first phase took place in Geneva hosted by the Government of Switzerland from 10 to 12 December 2003, and the second phase took place in Tunis hosted by the Government of Tunisia, from 16 to 18 November 2005. ·The AWO has initiated this database to reflect Arab women’s actual status and all available information and data about their problems and achievements in the seven areas of interest for the AWO (education, health and environment, media, sociology, economics, politics and law). The GIS will provide data necessary for having inter- and intra- Arab country comparisons regarding the  status of  women. It will also shed light on women victims in wars and armed conflicts.
